5 Summertime Skin Care Tips

Summer is starting up and whether you plan on hanging out poolside or beachside this season, here are five summertime skincare tips to help you transition your skincare routine from spring to summer.

#1 Ditch the Winter Layers

As you prepare to show more skin this summer, it’s time to ditch the winter layers of your skin with weekly exfoliation. Gently removing dry, dead skin leftover from the cold winter months helps to reveal a radiant complexion and gives your skin a healthy glow for summer. A quick wash with an exfoliating salt scrub just 1-2 times a week can leave you with fresh, smooth clear skin.

#2 Stay Hydrated

The best way to stay cool during the hot summer months is through hydration, which is why we naturally crave raw foods. Think smoothies, salads and juicy fruits. Be sure to drink plenty of water (half your body weight in ounces is a good recommendation) and load up on naturally cooling foods like fresh fruit, raw vegetables and Vitamin C rich foods like lemon. (Coconut water with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice anyone?) Eating well is one of the ultimate forms of self-care, so make sure you stock up on nutrient-dense foods this summer to cool off and stay hydrated.

If you are looking for a topical Vitamin-C to apply to your skin, try our Anti-Aging Vitamin C Serum, just be sure to avoid direct sunlight when using this product as sensitivity to sunlight may occur with use.

#3 Sun Protection

Make sure you are ready for summer with proper sun protection. We believe a healthy diet rich in antioxidants plays a large role in sun protection, but you should also wear plenty of sunscreen. Make sure to choose a safe sunscreen and apply it often. When choosing a safe sunscreen, look for sunscreens approved by the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

While some sunscreen companies are cleaning up their ingredient list, some are unfortunately still using chemical additives or worrisome ingredients. Some of these ingredients not only wreak havoc on the human body, but also the environment. Take oxybenzone for instance. When washed into the oceans off the skin of swimmers, this chemical has been shown to damage the coral reefs. (Not cool!) The chemicals found in sunscreens can even cause skin irritation after prolonged use and ultimately mess with hormones. Bottom line: Stick to safe sunscreens!

Once you choose a safe sunscreen, it’s recommended to use enough to fill a shot glass on each and every part of the body and face. Remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours and avoid being outside during midday sun (Noon – 3pm). If you plan on being outside during that time of day, stay cool in the shade or grab a large brim hat to protect your delicate skin from the harsh sun rays.

#4 Soothe Skin

Whether you forgot the sunscreen or didn’t apply enough, summer sun burns can happen, but you don’t have to suffer in pain. Super soothing botanicals like cooling aloe vera gel and our tallow beauty balm can help prevent peeling, reduce redness and quell inflammation. Apply generously at the first sight of irritation and continue to use until the burn has properly healed.

#5 Moisturize

The summer months tend to be more humid, so the skin doesn’t require a heavy layer of hydration like it does in the cold, dry winter months, but moisturizing is still incredibly important after a day spent outside or at the lake. After cleansing with your favorite soap, apply a hydrating, soothing body butter to keep skin soft, smooth and supple. It’s best to apply a moisturizer after showering while skin is still slightly damp that way you can capture moisture before skin fully dries.

As you make summer plans, take some time to properly prepare your skin for the new season. Simple sunscreen swaps, weekly exfoliation, daily moisturizing and healthy lifestyle changes like proper hydration can keep your skin, and your body, healthy all summer long so you glow from the inside out.
